March: A Time to Raise Awareness for Ovarian Cancer

For many years as a GP I have tried to raise awareness of this cancer, that is commonly labelled as the ‘silent’ killer of women!

With over 7500 women in the UK diagnosed every year and over 4000 deaths, more needs to be done to get it diagnosed at an earlier stage.

The trouble with ovarian cancer diagnosis is the symptoms are quite vague and ones that we could easily pass off as other causes. You only need to look at the age group that this disease affects most (over 50’s) and many may think they are normal menopausal (or perimenopausal) changes.

So what symptoms should ring alarm bells? 🔔

  • Bloating or swelling of the abdomen
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Frequent urination or urgency
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer.

While early detection remains a challenge, new imaging technologies, blood tests (such as the CA-125 test), and genetic testing can help identify those at higher risk.

What can we do?

Share the Facts: Spread awareness by sharing important information about ovarian cancer on social media or with your friends and family.

Encourage friends, or family, with symptoms to not put off seeing a GP: they can refer for further investigation and arrange a CA-125 blood test.
